Tennessee Medical Association Condemns Collierville Shooting

July 12, 2023

The Tennessee Medical Association is deeply saddened by the loss of one of our members, Dr. Benjamin Mauck, at the Campbell Clinic yesterday in Collierville, Tenn. The physicians of Tennessee, Dr. Mauck’s colleagues, offer their prayers and deepest condolences to his family.

TMA condemns all violence in the health care workplace. We have witnessed an increase in instances of violence toward staff, other patients and our own physicians.

The sanctity and safety of the physician-patient relationship lies at the heart of health care. The exam room should always be a place where patients receive the care and attention they need, free from fear and intimidation. Acts of violence against health care professionals are unacceptable and undermine the fundamental principles upon which our health care system is built.

All physicians, nurses, and health care workers have the right to practice medicine in an environment that is secure and protected. We urge policymakers, law enforcement agencies, and health care institutions to collaborate closely to enhance security measures, implement comprehensive training programs, and establish protocols to prevent such tragic incidents from occurring in the future.

TMA will continue to advocate for policies that promote the safety and security of all health care professionals.
